At Artful Surgery, more and more men are requesting Botox injections to get rid of pesky wrinkles around their eyes and forehead. It is a popular treatment options because it’s quick, it’s straightforward, and, most importantly, it’s effective.
Botox Cosmetic® is an injectable solution that fights wrinkles and fine lines on the face and neck. It is composed of the neurotoxin botulinum toxin, which effectively diminishes or removes the appearance of wrinkles by suspending movement of the facial muscles that create them. It does so by blocking signals between nerves and muscles, so the muscles do not contract.
Since it addresses wrinkles at the source, Botox not only immediately corrects the presence of these lines, but can also prevent new wrinkles from forming. For this reason, it is not uncommon for people to start getting Botox injections in their 20s and 30s, as it is seen as a potential preventative measure for later on in life. Plus, there is no harm in long term use.
Some celebrities are criticized for overusing Botox, so it can get a bad rep. But, Botox is extremely effective when used correctly. Botox naturally wears off over the course of three to four months, so muscle contractions are not permanently reduced. At this time, another injection would be necessary to maintain results.
Those who are familiar with Botox love it for it’s impressive results without requiring surgery or downtime. In fact, Botox injections are so quick that people come and get them done during their lunch breaks.
Plus, as cosmetic surgery becomes more and more popular among men, so are non-surgical solutions like Botox.
Men and Botox
It’s a misconception that Botox is only for women. A 2013 Botox assessment found that approximately one out of ten Botox patients are male, and Dr. Lee can attest to the fact that this number is rising, especially in the Bay Area. More and more men are getting Botox to improve their appearance as male plastic surgery and cosmetic treatments are rising in popularity as a whole as well.
Dr. Lee performs Botox injections for men differently than women since they have different aesthetic goals. Many men find that Botox makes them look less stern and allows them to age more attractively. Plus, properly administered injections result in a natural-looking youthful appearance, so nobody has to know.
What Botox Can Treat
Botox is effective at treating many of the lines, wrinkles, and creases that become more and more apparent with age. Think of it this way: every little facial expression – a smile, frown, squint, or laugh – contracts muscles in the face. These repeated contractions over time lead to the development of wrinkles that make the face appear older. Plus, a vast amount of facial contractions are subconscious, so it is impossible to fight them without a little help.
Botox can reduce and potentially prevent the appearance of:
- Crow’s feet
- Forehead lines
- Glabellar lines (frown lines)
- Squint lines
Botox can be used to treat dynamic lines that form around these areas as a result of facial movement. It may not be a good treatment option for deep creases, such as nasolabial folds or marionette lines around the mouth.
Further testing of Botox’s many uses has yielded substantial results in the treatment of neck bands. Botox can be injected to help relax the platysma muscle, a muscle in the neck that contributes to the appearance of a “turkey neck.” However, it is important to keep in mind that this “Botox neck lift” is not permanent and that it won’t help correct excess sagging skin or fat pockets. It also will not provide the same results as a neck lift. Botox is ideal for men without submental fat and have good elasticity in their skin.
Another relatively new use of Botox is for the treatment of an overly gummy smile. A gummy smile is a smile defined by more than two millimeters of gum showing when someone grins. Botox can correct this by being injected into the muscles that control contractions of the upper lip. By temporarily paralyzing these contractions, the gum stays covered when the patient smiles.
Botox is not only suitable for cosmetic purposes. Studies have found Botox to also be effective at treating:
- Excessive sweating: Also called hyperhidrosis, Botox can treat excessive sweating by being injected into the underarms. By doing so, nerve signals to sweat glands are interrupted, reducing its activity.
- Migraines: Botox can be used to prevent chronic migraines from occurring. Only certain candidates qualify for this treatment, so an initial consultation is necessary.
- Muscle spasms: Since Botox cuts off communication between muscles and nerves, it is highly effective at treating involuntary muscle spasms that have become problematic.
Benefits of Botox
There are many wonderful benefits of Botox, which make it such a prolific treatment. Below are some of the benefits that make Botox one of the most popular non-surgical aesthetic treatments.
- No downtime
- Effective treatment of dynamic facial wrinkles
- Variety of effective uses
- Preventative of new or worsening wrinkles
Botox has a wide variety of uses which makes it a viable treatment option for many men concerned with the appearance of wrinkles on their face, or experience a physical annoyance such as muscle spasms. It has been approved by the U.S. government for use on people ages 18-65. Candidates should have realistic expectations of what to anticipate following a Botox injection, such as the length of results. In order to determine whether or not a patient would be a good candidate for Botox, please request a Botox consultation at our Lafayette location.
Botox vs Fillers
Botox and dermal fillers are both non-surgical injectable cosmetic treatments. However, they differ in terms of how they work and what they can effectively treat. At Artful Surgery, we offer Juvéderm, Perlane, and Restylane, which are all hyaluronic acid fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance already found in our skin, so there is little to no chance for an adverse reaction. The different formulas are suited to plump lips and cheeks, as well as smooth the appearance of nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and vertical lip lines. We also offer Radiesse, a collagen based filler that is proven to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth.
In general, dermal fillers are better at smoothing lines around the nose and mouth, while Botox is more suited for around the eyes and forehead. Still, it is important to see a qualified doctor in order to determine the optimal treatment for any individual’s circumstance. In some cases, a combination of Botox and dermal fillers may be the ideal option for male patients as together they can offer the most comprehensive results.
A Botox procedure is extremely straight forward and typically takes under a minute to do. Your first visit will be scheduled for longer to allow Dr. Lee to meet you, understand your goals and design the best treatment plan. All Botox treatments are performed in our Lafayette office. Dr. Lee will mark the patient’s face on the optimal injection points, depending on the location of wrinkles and facial muscle movement. The treatment is quick and minimally uncomfortable with the use of tiny needles and ice. Topical anesthesia cream is available, but most patients really don’t need it. If you feel that you want topical anesthesia, let ArtfulSurgery’s staff know when booking your appointment as time is needed for the topical to work. After the injections, patients are free to return to their normal routines.
Side effects are not common, but some men may experience slight bruising around the injection site. However, this will go away on its own in a couple days. The appearance of wrinkles and lines may begin to fade right after the injections and will continue to improve over the next few weeks. The results typically last for about three months. After this time, repeat treatments will help you maintain results.
During a Botox consultation, men will have the opportunity to speak with Dr. Elizabeth Lee about their areas of concern and tell her more about their expectations from Botox. Dr. Lee will ask them to contract certain facial muscles while she examines the face and what is causing the appearance of certain wrinkles. Depending on what she observes and the patient’s desired results, Dr. Lee will recommend a course of action. It is not uncommon for a doctor to prescribe a combination of both Botox and dermal fillers to meet the patient’s aesthetic desires.
At this time, Dr. Lee will be able to develop a treatment plan for the patient and schedule an appointment for their first injection. In some cases, Dr. Lee may be able to schedule the Botox treatment the same day as the consultation, depending on availability.
At the time of the consultation, Dr. Lee will also be able to provide patients with pricing for their treatment. The cost of Botox will depend on how much of the product they require and the number of locations.
