Types of Implants
Dr. Lee offers saline and silicone implants. Saline and silicone implants both achieve beautiful breast augmentation outcomes. The type of implant you receive will depend on your personal goals and preferences.
Saline implants are made of a silicone shell that is filled with a sterile saline solution. Saline implants have a natural but firm feel. Breasts that receive saline implants tend to have a more pronounced projection and structured appearance. Saline breast implants can be round, shaped, or teardrop-shaped. Saline has the advantage of minimal scarring, due to the fact that the implant is placed through a tiny incision before it is inflated with sterile saline. Some women choose saline implants because if the implant ruptures, there is no need to worry about the effects of the saline within the body. Saline implants have a slightly higher chance of being detected in the breast than silicone implants.
Silicone implants most closely resemble the feel of natural breast tissue. Silicone is a highly popular implant choice. There is a small chance “silent rupture” will occur, which refers to a leak in the implant that is only detectable by MRI. While silica leaks do not pose a health risk, they can lead to discomfort in the breasts. Patients will need to have annual check-ups to determine the health of their implant. On the small chance a rupture is detected, any leaked silica will be removed from the body and a new implant will be placed.
We see high satisfaction rates with both saline and silicone implants. Both types of implant are available in round, shaped, and teardrop formation. Some patients prefer the fullness the round implant achieves, while others decide they like the natural breast appearance achieved with tear-drop shaped implants.
Implants can be textured or smooth, although there is currently a shift away from textured implants.
The type of implant you receive will predominantly depend on your personal preference. Once Dr. Elizabeth Lee has run a comprehensive assessment, she will make a recommendation of the implant type she feels will best accomplish your results.
Implants can be placed in one of two depths in the breast: submuscular or subglandular. Implant placement will depend on many factors, including your implant size, type, and your existing breast tissue.
Subglandular placement is less invasive. This produces a more comfortable recovery.
For subglandular implant placement, the implant will lie underneath the breast tissue but above the pectoral muscle. This can allow the implants can be more pronounced and placed closer together to create more cleavage. Subglandular placement comes with a higher chance of scar tissue forming around the implant, also known as capsular contracture. This implant placement can make mammograms more difficult to perform.
During submuscular placement, the implant is placed under the pectoral muscle. The implant is less visible in this position and there is less chance of capsular contracture. It is easier to get accurate mammography with submuscular implant.
Your implants can be placed in one of three methods:
- Through an incision made in the crease under the breast
- Through an incision made to the areola, where any scarring will be minimally visible
- Through an incision in the underarm or belly button.
The type of incision used to perform your breast augmentation will depend on the type of incision Dr. Lee recommends and your treatment preferences.
Are Breast Implants Right For Me?
If you wish your breasts had more volume or fullness, consider breast implants. Women who would like to make their breasts bigger or more proportionate are good candidates for implants. Women ages 18 and over can add natural-looking volume to their breasts that will last for years!
You are an excellent candidate for breast implants if you:
- Are in overall good health
- Are at a stable weight
- Wish your breasts were larger or more even
- Have undergone lumpectomy, mastectomy, or other events that affected the appearance of your breasts
- Have a mild to moderate degree of skin elasticity
- Have a good understanding of the outcomes achievable with breast implants
- Are a non-smoker
If you are only looking to add one cup size to your breasts, you may be a good candidate to augment your breasts with fat gathered from your own body. Fat grafting is also an excellent way to improve the look and texture of the breasts achieved with breast implants.
Dr. Lee can discuss the benefits of fat transfer versus breast augmentation with implants with you during your private consultation with her.
Breast implants and fat transfer will add volume to the breasts but will not address the position of the breasts. Patients who would like to reduce the sag of their breasts and restore a high, perky breast position are invited to ask Dr. Lee about Breast Lift with Implants during their private consultation.
For women who are not interested in surgical breast augmentation, we also offer Brava. Brava is a breast-enhancing apparatus worn during the day. Brava’s suction device will improve breast size, but the effects are usually only temporary. Brava can be helpful, but many women find the Brava system a little awkward to wear.
Dr. Elizabeth Lee will perform a comprehensive assessment in order to determine your candidacy for breast implants. She will examine your breasts and take photos in order to help her determine what type and size of implant will accomplish your desired goals. Dr. Lee will also assess your medical history and medication use in order to guarantee your surgery will be safe and right for you. She will discuss implant types with you, as well as implant placement options.
Dr. Lee will work with you to customize a treatment plan that will accomplish your goals and best compliment your individual physique.
Whether you are a candidate for breast reconstruction or considering cosmetic improvement to your breasts, Dr. Lee is here for you. She will be happy to answer any questions you may have about breast implants. We invite you to create a list of your questions and bring them with you to your consultation so Dr. Lee can answer every one for you.
Once you create a treatment plan with Dr. Lee, you will receive a cost estimate that reflects the details of your individualized procedure.
The details of your breast implant surgery will vary based on your implant type, your existing breast tissue, and your goals for your appearance. You will meet with an anesthesiologist the week of your surgery in order to determine what form of anesthesia will be right for you. Advancements in placement methods now enable qualifying patients to receive breast implants under local anesthesia and sedation, thereby reducing recovery time and procedure costs.
Your breast implant surgery will be tailored to your exact preferences.
The type of incision used to perform your breast augmentation will depend on the type of breast implant and breast surgery you are receiving. Your breast implant will be placed at the depth pre-determined by Dr. Lee during your consultation. Your incisions will then be closed with sutures.
If you will be receiving fat grafting to the breasts in addition to your implant, Dr. Lee will perform minimally-invasive liposuction to extract fat for transfer at the beginning of the procedure. The fat will be processed and sterilised. Once your implants are in place, Dr. Lee will carefully inject your autologous fat to add volume and correct any tissue irregularities in the breast.
Due to the effects of the anesthesia, it will be necessary to have a friend or family member drive you home after your procedure. We also advise that this person stay with you during the first night following your surgery to help you begin your rest and recovery as comfortably as possible.
Dr. Lee performs breast augmentation with implants using the most advanced, minimally-invasive methods available. This creates a shorter and more comfortable recovery. You will be able to return to work within a week of your surgery! If you have a more physically demanding job, you may need to take a few weeks off from work.
Dr. Lee will discuss your anticipated recovery timeline with you.
Rest is important during the first few days of your recovery. Light activity is recommended after breast implant surgery in order to maintain healthy circulation. Do not go swimming or submerge yourself in water until six weeks after your procedure.
Bruising and swelling are common after receiving breast implants. The majority of bruising will heal within the first ten days. The majority of swelling will be improved within three weeks and continue to diminish for up to three months. You will receive a compression garment to wear to improve your results.
You will receive personalized recovery instructions. These instructions will cover details such as approved methods of relieving discomfort and ways you should care for your compression garment.
We will be with you every step of the way as you recover from breast implant surgery. You will return to Artful Surgery for follow-up appointments throughout your recovery to allow Dr. Lee to assess your progress.
As post-procedure swelling diminishes, you will notice that your breasts are fuller and have more attractive shape. You will be able to show off your new breasts within a month of receiving your breast implants at Artful Surgery.
You will have more pronounced curves and look great in swimwear!
The results achieved with your breast implants can be maintained for the long-term. In general, saline implants will need to be exchanged within ten to twenty years of placement, while silicone implants should be exchanged roughly every ten years.
Silicone and saline implants are safe, FDA-approved methods of adding attractive volume to the breasts. There is a small risk of silent rupture in silicone implants, but this can be detected during a patient’s annual implant examination. If silicone leaks from the implant, it can create discomfort, but does not pose a health risk.
Recent research suggests that textured breast implants slightly increase a woman’s chance of developing anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). If you currently have a textured implant and have questions, we invite you to reach out to us to schedule an informative meeting with Dr. Lee today.
Breast implants last on average ten to twenty years before they should be replaced. You will return regularly throughout this period to allow Dr. Lee to assess your implant health and make sure you are completely happy with your results.
